Letters to Juan Cortés, 1825.

In these two letters to Fray Cortés, Fray Durán expresses his concern over the arrival of the new governor. He is worried, for he believes the Mexican government has mistaken ideas about California and the missionaries. As he has refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Mexican Constitution, he plans to sail to Manila in the case of expulsion, and will be greatly saddened to leave fifty years of work behind. He also writes of new supplies arriving for the mission, including a new altar-piece and white vestments for special occasions, for which Fray Durán will trade much hide and tallow. FAC 735 is dated July 15, and FAC 736 is dated September 26. Facsimiles. In Spanish.
